THE BYSTANDER MANEUVER | CREATIVE + ENGAGEMENT STRATEGY

Throughout 2020 until now, halfway through 2021, the rise of anti-Asian hate crimes has increased exponentially both in the United States and around the globe. When looking at the footage of these horrific crimes, we noticed that people were witnessing from the sidelines but never taking any action. We realized that people often don’t know how to react in these types of situations.

Inspired by the good folks at Hollaback!, we leveraged the five Ds of bystander intervention to create the Bystander Maneuver—a step-by-step visual that educates people on how to act in a situation of hate. Like the Heimlich Maneuver posters commonly found in restaurants and public spaces, we envision the Bystander Maneuver to live in the same spaces where it can become something that every person recognizes.

The Bystander Maneuver is not going to rid the world of hate crimes. But it will inform and educate everyday people, putting them in a position to make a difference.

ON SOCIAL:

Inspired by the bright, eye-catching Heimich Maneuver posters, we wanted to create equally vibrant designs for that were eye-catching on social.
